while now after hearing about it. I guess he wanted to discover more
options as a place for Che-che Lee (2.5yo) to use up her energy besides
the few parks that we frequent. Now that the latest Baby Lee is 2 months
old, we decided to venture into the unknown one fine evening. Mama Lee
was secretly excited as Papa Lee had somehow hyped up the place.

We
were brave enough to go near the Kek Lok Si temple a day post-Chap Goh
Mei, the last day of Chinese New Year. It was also a public holiday for
Thaipusam. I guess we just wanted to go somewhere.

The drive up was steep. There were a few times Papa Lee wondered
if our Alza will be able to bring all four of us all the way up! Mama
Lee also had to feed Baby Lee as the pressure began to build up in our ears on the
way up. The roads are narrow with cars zooming down on the next
lane! Yikes! We finally made it up and discovered that the place has
limited (very!) parking so we had to park along another steep road! Mama
Lee was paranoid walking downhill with Baby Lee in a carrier!

View on the way back

Honestly, the view was breathtaking! There are tarred roads along the
way and we noticed a lot of cyclists (who cycled all the way uphill!!),
plenty of exercise enthusiasts hiking the numerous routes, some families
with young children and a couple with a stroller. There is a small
playground with 2 out of 4 usable swings and a slide with one portion
cordoned off like in crime scene to prevent a small foot from
accidentally stepping into the hole. Hmm... Other than that, Che-che Lee
enjoyed spending time with nature spotting things like the giant ant or the waterfall around her.

Quenching her thirst

We did not notice any toilets in sight so nappy changing will
have to be in the back seat of the car though we are pretty sure there must be one around. Breastfeeding will take place in the car too to prevent a heat stroke! ;-P I also wonder if there is a
learning centre for children so they can know more about what a dam is
and what is it for etc.

Meanwhile, we can safely conclude
that we will not be back there till the kids are much bigger. Don't let
this deter you from bringing young children there for a good sweat out
and to enjoy the serenity of the place though.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3466623966168697883.post-67798886093551399932012-02-07T00:16:00.000-08:002012-02-07T00:19:31.591-08:00Welcome Baby J!

Baby J Lee was finally delivered safely and
naturally on 30 November 2011 at Tanjung Medical Centre weighing a
whopping 3.75kg! (I blame it on the Penang food!!) He was still feeling
all warm and fuzzy in there and had to be induced out 6 days post due
date. It was a relief when all that weight was taken away and then
whizz! boom! bang! and he is now already two months old! Time flies when
you have a baby to care for, and even faster when you have a toddler as
well!

Amidst all the nappy changing and sleepless nights, the Lees have still managed to take a breather away from the endless laundries to discover more of Penang again including places like the brand new Gurney Paragon and Precinct 10. Only problem now is to find the time to blog about them! Anyhow, do stay tune for more!

Pssst... btw, did you know that Mickey and friends will be visiting Penang in March? It has been a year since the Lees started blogging about their discoveries in Penang as a young family. Although we took a break off (due to morning sicknesses and what nots!), we are still very keen to share our amazing journey with you, especially together with a new addition to our family, Jr Lee, soon!!
The popular Peanuts cartoon-themed cafe finally reached our shores with other branches located in Korea, Hong Kong, China and Singapore. It seems many have flocked to the cafe to have a closer look and take tonnes of pictures with the well-loved Snoopy, Woodstock, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the gang.

Since it was Baby Lee's birthday two days ago, we decided to pay Charlie Brown and friends a visit as we were sure that Baby Lee will love it there!

On display but unfortunately not for sale! Ishh...

The cafe is huge and divided into different sections with different layouts - sofa seats, private rooms, casual rattan chairs... Overall spacious enough to maneuver buggies and for kids to run amok. Baby Lee made herself at home by lying and climbing all over the empty sofas!

All was well till we came to the food bit.. The ordering system was chaotic to begin with. We had to order from the counter with no proper menus for us to look at before our turn to order so there was a long queue as everyone waits for their turn to view the menus, consider what to order, make the order and pay. It would be better for them to have a big lighted up menu signage like those in McDonald's or Kentucky Fried Chicken if they want to consider this system so that people in queue can decide on what they want to order while waiting.

Be warned that the menu is not extensive and definitely overpriced! For three mains, two drinks and a dessert, our total bill came up to a shocking RM85.15!! Well, to be honest, for its novelty and since it's a birthday celebration, we didn't mind paying but to pay that much for sub-standard food is unacceptable.

To start off with is the Mini Chicken Burger we ordered for Baby Lee. It is also the most expensive item we ordered. It is served with salted fries and some carrot shreds on a slice of lettuce. The two Mini Burgers are tiny. For RM16.80, the burger is not even a real burger patty but just half a slice of chicken ham fried in a teaspoon of egg resulting in some hard-textured 'patty'. Sandwiched between two buttered halves of wholemeal bun are the ham, a slice of lettuce, a slice of tomato and two half slices of cucumber in a little mayonnaise. I kept thinking that Baby Lee could have made the burger herself! The only thing I would give credit for is for them using wholemeal buns instead of processed white buns. Even then, the buns felt kind of stale.

We ordered a cheese cake as an additional little birthday cake. The Lucy Lavender Cheese cake is probably the only good thing that we ordered. Rich in cheese and with sprinkles of real lavender decorated with a pretty purple ribbon and an image of Lucy on white chocolate.
The MLTR World Tour Live in Malaysia 2011 will be held in the Penang PISA Stadium on 22 April as well as in KL and Kuantan later. They will be presenting some old favourites (remember Sleeping Child, 25 Minutes Too Late, That's Why (You Go Away), The Actor, etc.??) as well as new releases.

Should you decide to go, the event is organized by Star Planet and tickets for the MLTR World Tour Live in Malaysia 2011 are priced at RM323 (VIP), RM223 (PS1), RM163 (PS2), and RM103 (PS3).

Penang Hill Corporation director Datuk Lee Kah Choon said the train will run for charity for the first six days until April 30.

"For a contribution of RM10 (return ticket), you can enjoy a 10-minute ride on Penang Hill's new funicular train.

"The proceeds from the charity sale of tickets will be channelled to the Penang State Welfare for donation to the underprivileged identified by the state government," said Lee, adding that children below the age of 12 years could enjoy the ride for free during the period.

Lee was speaking to reporters in a press conference here Thursday to announce the new train fares effective May 1.

For Malaysians, the fare for a return ticket is RM8 per adult and RM4 per child aged between three and 12.

Senior citizens will enjoy cheaper fares at RM4 per person.

The ride continues to remain free of charge for disabled persons holding the OKU card.

Also unchanged are the fares for Penang Hill residents, licensed traders and hawkers and workers, who can purchase monthly season pass at RM24.

The blue, air-conditioned Swiss-made coaches, capable of ferrying up to 100 passengers at one go, will run every half hour from 6.30am to 9pm daily.

The new RM73mil system replaces the 87-year-old funicular railway, which was closed in February last year.
Funny how it took us so long to chance upon Island Park Restaurant situated just directly opposite the Chung Hwa Confucian High School. We have been back numerous times just for the assam laksa as this is one of the better tasting ones around. Given the location, taste, and price (only RM2.50 per bowl!), it is a sure winner with us and chances of bumping into us there is definitely quite high now. The well balanced sweet and sour soup is rather thick which is a sign that a good amount of fish is added into it. On top of that, every bowl is served with a dash of my favourite bunga kantan (torch ginger)! Mm mmm.... Now, all we have to do is wait for the verdict from Grandpapa Lee when he comes visiting next! Meanwhile, we’ll continue to enjoy it!!

Rojak (a dish where bite size pieces of fruits and vegetables along with a few cuttefish at times is mixed together with a sweet shrimp paste and peanut concoction) is one of Papa Lee's all time favourite! He can gobble up the whole lot all by himself and gladly repeat the procedure day after day if no one stops him!

When it comes to rojak, Majestic Rojak has been hailed as the best in Penang! So we HAD to try it. We bought a packet back and when pouring the shrimp paste mixture over the fruits, we discovered that the paste was very thick and goo-ey, almost hard unlike the slightly more liquid ones that we usually eat. We also find the paste on the sweeter side. I suspect the paste has a whole tonne of sugar in it which explains why it is less liquid and sweeter!

Can't remember exactly what else was in the Majestic Rojak but there was definitely turnip, pineapple, cucumber, mango and cuttlefish. A small portion now costs RM4.00 and a bigger one RM5.00 which may be slightly overpriced but expected where it is located and with the name it carries.
It is an all female spa with an English themed setting, very different from the other typical Balinese, Thai or Zen themed spas indeed. We accidentally discovered it one of those days out in town and thought the exterior very appealing.
Still not familiar with the routes here. The pouring rain didn't help either causing traffic to crawl.

After parking in one of the allocated lots, I headed to the building. As I neared the entrance, the door opened and a young girl (whom is also my masseuse) greeted me and swiftly brought me through a series of nicely adorned hallways to a dimly lit room, all decorated with a touch of English charm. She then handed me a disposable bra, panty and shower cap and told me to change into them. She also informed me that we will start with a foot scrub before proceeding onto the body scrub and then left me to undress. I must say that this is the first time I see a disposable bra (which is basically just a piece of tissue-textured material placed across the chest and tied behind)! Even spa resorts like Tanjung Jara and Four Seasons in Bali do not provide these. Nice to know that there is an option for those who want to keep it more modest.
She told me the salts used helps in removing dead skin cells and has whitening properties. During the scrub, I managed to find out her name (whom we shall call A from now on), that the establishment is only half a year old and owned by a local. After that, I was told to lie on the massage bed for the body scrub. To my surprise, the bed has a thermal blanket which keeps it nice and warm. They really do think of the little details. The scrub lasted about half an hour. I found out then that this is A's first job. So she only has about six month's experience. Hmm...
She told me to lie in the tub filled with warm (more to the hot side) water on a mat which has some 360 holes. Eh? She then explained that 15 minutes inside the bath is equivalent to having worked out for 3 hours! Hmm... Besides, the bath helps with firming, detox and slimming... Wow... (while trying to suppress a little laughter of disbelieve of such wonder). A then switched the bath on and the mat started 'boiling' bubbles around me. So that's what the 360 holes are for. A dimmed the lights and left me for the next 15 minutes. I tried to close my eyes and relax in the 'pot of soup'. After a while, I started to feel like I was floating in the middle of a vast ocean with thousands of squid surrounding me squirting ink on my face! Hmm.. this bath thing is not really my cup of tea. I never knew 15 minutes can last soooooo loooong... but hey, if it slims, firms and detox and leaves you thinking you have done 3 hours of gym........... At some point, I started to even feel a little dizzy. Sea sickness? The squids has not stopped squirting ink on my face!

When the whole floating in the sea experience ended, I actually did feel tired, as though I had just worked out! A came with a cup of ginger tea and asked if I was feeling light-headed. She told me to continue sitting in the bath for a while and relax before changing into another set of disposables for my massage.

Back on the massage bed, A started my Enduring Forever Treatment massage on my back. I did feel a little more relaxed after the fitness bath but a more experienced masseuse would be able to tell that I was trying hard to relax my shrugged shoulders. A more experienced masseuse would also be able to identify and focus on the tonnes of knotted muscles on my taxed back. However, being a young apprentice, A did everything wholeheartedly, drawing long slow moves, no short cuts unlike some experienced masseuse.

I started to relax more during the second half of the massage but didn't doze off unlike most times. Honestly, I would have preferred to have a longer back massage. Overall, it was still a pleasant experience and I felt pampered.

Note: No photography allowed so the above pictures are taken directly from their brochure. The body treatment costs RM68 as a one time first trial offer and the fitness bath costs RM50. Total treatment was RM118.
The refreshing drink is claimed by some to relief coughs and helps to replenish lost minerals from a bout of diarrhoea. This no-sugar needed beverage is also recommended for pregnant women and babies to prevent dehydration on hot and sunny days. Coconut drinks do not come cheap though. A whole local coconut can cost a whopping RM3.50 served in food courts. This is where Anba Coconut Trading Sdn Bhd steps in.
We are no doubt intrigued to see how well our public transport works. At the same time, I wanted to find an alternative way to work as we share one car in the family. Thankfully, the location of the bus routes are located within walking distance from both home and workplace.

Before waking up half an hour earlier for my first venture, I made a call to <a href="http://www.rapidpg.com.my/" target="_blank"">Rapid Penang the day before to check on the bus time schedule and routes. My call was promptly answered and they could only commit on the frequency of buses passing by every half an hour. No fix time given. Fair enough. Off I went and indeed my wait was less than half hour when bus 401 arrived at my stop which leads to the Penang Airport through the Bayan Lepas Industrial Area.
The bus looked brand new as though it just drove off from the production floor. I paid my RM2.00 and chose a seat at the last row. There's slightly less room space for my lanky legs, but the seats were clean, in order and comfortable. There seemed to be more standing room capacity than sitting down, which can be useful for mothers who need to bring along their babies in the stroller. However, I'm not sure if the bus has the feature of lowering its suspension at the door entrance for easier access of wheel chairs & strollers in / out of bus. A glance at the passengers made me felt like a minority in my home country as most of them looked like foreigners. Along the journey, the bus stopped at several more points to pick up passengers before finally arriving at my stop. Bells are conveniently located along the pathway, and within my arm's reach.

Overall, I find the journey pleasant and impressed by the squeaky clean appearance of the bus. Although just a makeshift stall along a narrow alley, it is considerably clean. The people manning the store, presumably the owners all from the same family, are friendly and chatty. The entire setting is just... relaxing.
On to what we came here for: the food. The half-boiled eggs are perfectly done the way we like it - with the yolks almost cooked but still very soft, not runny. The eggs are casually placed on top of two slices of traditional homely white bread lightly toasted on charcoal fire. Our mate pointed out that the eggs are cooked through with no transparent bits but remained half-boiled. Good point! The ‘owners’ very generously shared how it was done - just cover the eggs in very hot boiling water for a few minutes. Hmm.... Notice the exact amount of minutes is not revealed? Anyway, you can also request for some curry to complement the eggs on toasts.
There were signs for something called the Nasi Dalca around the stall. Since we had not had Nasi Dalca before, were curious to know how it tastes like. Not sure how adventurous you are but there is room for a stroller here despite the humble setting in this little nook but don’t expect the availability of high chairs for really little ones. It is also probably easier to park in the multi-storey car park located just next to this little lane.
Although Penang is famous for this dish with rich yet delicate flavours, the good ones are not easily available throughout the island. So far, we know of the Air Itam Market Assam Laksa and the famous Balik Pulau Assam Laksa. We quite like the assam laksa on Lorong Selamat and don't mind the one on Penang Street. We were then recommended this one in Air Itam just in front of the Klinik Pergigian Kanak-kanak Air Itam along Jalan Stesen Bukit Bendera opposite the Asia Cafe Penang Hill Food Court.

So we headed opposite to the Asia Cafe Penang Hill Food Court. The assam laksa there is another diluted disaster. After lunch at the Asia Cafe Penang Hill Food Court, we were about to make our way home when we were informed that the famous assam laksa stall has started its business. That was at about 1.45pm. We proceeded to take away a big packet anyway (RM3.50) and couldn't wait to dig into it the whole journey home as the aroma fills our nostrils!
Papa Lee thinks it lacks the sourness of the pineapples. It actually tastes sweet and is definitely not spicy as Baby Lee had her share too! It is important to us that the assam laksa has a good balance of sweetness, sourness and spiciness to it. Anyway, the overall taste is better than the few that we had before this. So it is still worth a trip back when there's a craving for assam laksa next time!
We ordered four 'small' dishes and the portion was enough for 3-4 persons. Price range around RM8.00 for a small Deep Fried Chicken in Marmite Sauce to RM12.00 for a medium and RM16.00 for a large. Comes with Deep Fried Mantou too! Taste wise was good. No complains. So was the Braised Garden Green with Mushroom, Braised Homemade Beancurd with Assorted Meat in Hot Plate and Szechuan Hot and Sour Soup (which wasn't really hot though).YiPin serves a mean Gui Ling Gao too! A must have desert so leave space for them (yes, you might just have more than one)!
It is a pity though that food tastes average here and may be a tad over-priced for the portion. The Pan Mee (RM3.50) was way too oily. I had to remove what seemed like half an inch of solidifying fats from the bowl before reaching the real contents. The Pan Mee actually wasn’t too bad apart from the fact that it is missing the vital ingredient of deep fried ikan bilis.

As for the Assam Laksa (RM4.00), we promised ourselves that we would not order it again. At a glance, the soup looks diluted. It did taste diluted and doesn’t give any kick at all.

Papa Lee must have been real hungry by then as he ordered Pasembor and Mee Sultan (RM9.00 for both). The Pasembor tasted sweet and the supposedly crispy crackers had lost its crispiness when it was served. Mee Sultan (named after the Sultan of the stall aka the owner) on the other hand is worth going back for. Mee Sultan is none other than just mee goreng friend with squid. Maybe because all the rest were a bit of a disappointment, Mee Sultan wins the taste factor hands down. Don’t be put off too early though as there are still plenty of other stalls at the New World Park Hawker Centre to discover - hong siu ca yok mee (minced pork noodle), oyster noodle, Hokkien prawn mee, Tom Yam mee to name a few..

Food aside, we do find the New World Park a nice hang-out place for the family with safe, wide open spaces for toddlers to run around. New World Park itself also has other food outlets (eg. Mizi Bistro, Passions of Kerala, Old Town Cafe, Starbucks, Nyonya Cafe and more). One of the most popular events organised every 1st and 3rd weekends of the month at the New World Park is the Weekend Market in the Park. They also conduct aerobic dance exercises every Thursday (7-8pm) and Saturday (8-9am). If you dine in on a Saturday evening, you may just be entertained by strollers strolling in the various F&B outlets. For more information, call: 04-226 1199.

Bratwurst and sauerkraut

Christmas came a bit early this year as we ‘celebrated’ the event at the Malaysian-German Society premise yesterday. This year’s Christmas Bazaar started at 3pm. For the Lees, we headed straight for some bratwurst to fill out tummys first. We were a little taken aback at the price though. A plate of German wurtz and sauerkraut (or potato salad) costs us a whopping RM9.00! Canned soft drinks were priced at RM3.00. Anyway, we were happy to chomp down some authentic German food.

Once fed, we headed inside the blue colonial building to check out the stalls selling Christmas decorations, jewellery and jams amongst other things. Our favourite is Patricia’s Celebrate Life stall selling self-sewn trinkets and aprons. Sweet!
At about 4pm, the German children gathered upstairs to sing us a few Christmas carols while we enjoyed homemade traditional German cakes! Mind you, you can’t find these baked commonly in Penang. Which is why we have been back numerous times to this blue premise located along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah / Sungai Tiram. Basically, you choose the type of seafood to be included in your bowl of noodles (‘maggi’ noodle being one of the favourites) or porridge. The selection of seafood varies but we have seen fish fillet, ‘tau teh’ fish head, cuttlefish, prawns, crabs, fish balls, fish maw, and sometimes even frogs. Double check the price before heading back to your table as your bowl may costs more than RM20! Typically, a bowl of noodles with just fish fillet costs less than RM10. On average, a bowl with 2-3 items costs around RM12-14, again depending on selection but at the same time, one of our visits for two bowls of noodles costs us only RM12.

Other food served here includes salted chicken, some kuih as well as chicken and pork satay. Yes, pork satay. This is our first time trying it the pork way but we concluded that the chicken ones tasted better from this stall anyway. Joo Leong Cafe is also open for breakfast and is well-known for their roti bakar (toasted bread) served with half-boiled eggs. The good news is, Joo Leong Cafe roti bakar is also available for dinner!

The place is clean and comfortable although the high chairs for toddlers here can almost be considered antiques! There is plenty of room for strollers too. The main problem dining at Joo Leong is probably the parking or the lack of. You will have to find a spot by the side of a road with high traffic. Start locating a space when nearing the shop. Otherwise, you will find yourself parked way down the road or having to make two U-turns to get back for a second attempt.
We were really glad that the Penang Children Library (Georgetown branch) is located not too far from us. I brought Baby Lee there one of those afternoons to check the place out. It is a two storey building with different sections of books for children of different ages. There seems to be quite a good collection of books but only a handful for babies and toddlers. The place is clean and conducive though it can be a tad too quite for a curious toddler who is still clumsily flipping through the pages of a book and shouts excitedly at a familiar picture!
The best part of the library is the availability of the I-Play Room. This area is a child's (and maybe some adults') wonderland! For a nominal fee of RM12 per year, a child can go goo-goo-gaa-gaa in there! There's a closet full of clothes for pretend play, bright chairs and tables for activities, make belief kitchen area, wooden work benches.. you name it!
I was informed that they conduct some activities for kids on Saturdays and Sundays at about 11am too. I have been trying to look for some places to bring Baby Lee to during the weekdays instead of just staying at home. This place would have been great for us if not for the opening hours. The Children Library including the I-Play Room are only open on weekdays Wednesdays to Fridays 2pm-5.30pm which is right smack in the middle of Baby Lee's nap time! :(

Anyway, to register, you will need your child's MyKid or copy of birthcert with two passport size pictures and RM12.
It has been more than three years since we have last been to any Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf cafes! Anyway, this Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf branch seems quite family friendly as we saw another family with a baby there. Maybe because it is situated next to a hotel?

Getting a car park along Gurney Drive wasn’t too bad given that it was a week day and it was around 9pm. We had the chance to walk along the walkway listening to the lapping sounds of the waves with the sea breeze blowing at our faces.

Won’t comment much about the food and drinks as they will probably be the same at the other branches but we have plans to return for breakfast one day sitting outside the cafe under one of the many umbrella tables with a safe place for Baby Lee to run around while we enjoy our coffee and newspapers by the sea!
