Penang Children Library

We love books and have been encouraging Baby Lee to love books too. We were really glad that the Penang Children Library (Georgetown branch) is located not too far from us. I brought Baby Lee there one of those afternoons to check the place out. It is a two storey building with different sections of books for children of different ages. There seems to be quite a good collection of books but only a handful for babies and toddlers. The place is clean and conducive though it can be a tad too quite for a curious toddler who is still clumsily flipping through the pages of a book and shouts excitedly at a familiar picture!

The best part of the library is the availability of the I-Play Room. This area is a child's (and maybe some adults') wonderland! For a nominal fee of RM12 per year, a child can go goo-goo-gaa-gaa in there! There's a closet full of clothes for pretend play, bright chairs and tables for activities, make belief kitchen area, wooden work benches.. you name it!

I was informed that they conduct some activities for kids on Saturdays and Sundays at about 11am too. I have been trying to look for some places to bring Baby Lee to during the weekdays instead of just staying at home. This place would have been great for us if not for the opening hours. The Children Library including the I-Play Room are only open on weekdays Wednesdays to Fridays 2pm-5.30pm which is right smack in the middle of Baby Lee's nap time! :(

Anyway, to register, you will need your child's MyKid or copy of birthcert with two passport size pictures and RM12.

Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Gurney Hotel, Penang

Dear hubby wanted to pay a visit to the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Gurney Hotel branch along Gurney Drive after dinner last night. It has been more than three years since we have last been to any Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf cafes! Anyway, this Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf branch seems quite family friendly as we saw another family with a baby there. Maybe because it is situated next to a hotel?

Getting a car park along Gurney Drive wasn’t too bad given that it was a week day and it was around 9pm. We had the chance to walk along the walkway listening to the lapping sounds of the waves with the sea breeze blowing at our faces.

Won’t comment much about the food and drinks as they will probably be the same at the other branches but we have plans to return for breakfast one day sitting outside the cafe under one of the many umbrella tables with a safe place for Baby Lee to run around while we enjoy our coffee and newspapers by the sea!

Little Penang Street Market

While dining at Nyonya Breeze one of those nights, we came across a brochure on the Little Penang Street Market. It sounded really interesting so we decided to make it a date.

The Little Penang Street Market is held every last Sunday of the month on Upper Penang Road. This bazaar aims to promote talents in the form of handicrafts or acts. Other than the customary handmade costume jewellery and accessories such as handbags, there were some really interesting eye openers. I found this lady sewing all these cute little baby booties by hand! And an ex-headmaster folding and selling these:(!)

patriotic paper planes!
Food is served but can be very pricey! A packet of plain Meehoon Siam costs RM3. Papa Lee's pick and mix Nyonya meal costs a whopping RM8 with just three scoops of different dishes and some rice!

One of the stalls had a lot of people crowded around it. I went to take a peak and found Nellcis Home-made Snacks selling a range of cakes! They all looked so good and were selling like, well, hot cakes! I wish I can have a piece each! In the end, I settled for the Russian Marble Cheesecake and Cempedak Cake. I must say the Cempedak Cake is heavenly, if you love cempedak like Mama Lee but the Russian Marble Cheesecake was good too! They were also selling the conventional carrot cake and moist chocolate cake as well as others like pumpkin cake and durian cake. Each piece of cake is priced at about RM5-6. Cakes are baked fresh every morning. Nely wakes up at 4am to bake!! If you are interested, you can contact Nellcis at:
6-5-2 Komplex Farlim,
Lebuhraya Thean Teik,
Bandar Baru,
Ayer Itam 11500 Penang.
Nely - 016 443 1336
Chin - 0164538133

The Little Penang Street Market can be a fun outing for the whole family. However, if you have little one, the environment may not be very conducive. We were lucky that the weather was cool when we were there. Otherwise, it can be pretty humid and slightly crowded. Anyway, it can still be a fun outing if everyone is in the mood for it!

siTigun Bicycle Pit-Stop Café

We've been wanting to check out this place and finally managed to drop in for breakfast this morning.

siTigun is a nice little carefree hang-out park-your-bikes café with the word green in mind. Don't expect air-conditioning or expensive ice-blends. Instead siTigun serves home-roasted, rich Robusta coffee (from Bali, Indonesia), home-made croissants and cinnamon rolls amongst others. We like!

Then there's the original Indonesian style satay only available on Friday and Saturday nights. Interesting. We have to go back and try the yummy looking cakes too!

Why a bicycle pit-stop café? The owner, Tigun Wibisana used to travel around on his bike searching for the right place to settle down. If you're looking for a relaxing place to exchange conversations over a cup of roasted coffee in one of Penang's heritage buildings, check out siTigun!

Precious Ones Educational Toy Store

Someone recommended us the Precious Ones toy store which stocks up on wooden toys here in Penang. It’s located just a few houses (converted to shops) away from the famous Penang Char Kway Teow stall on the famous Lorong Selamat, Penang. To be honest, if we were not told about this place, we wouldn’t have found it. As you approach the front, there are three different entrances leading to three different businesses! That explains why the signboards are so crowded and confusing. Inside Precious Ones, you will go agog with the plethora of educational toys available! All packed in one-third of the space allocated to them. From cloth books to DVDs, wooden work benches to cook stoves, growth charts to crafts. We couldn’t spend too much time in there but this will definitely be one place I will go to to purchase toys for babies/ toddlers in the future!

Location: 56, Lorong Selamat, Penang, Malaysia.

Queensbay Mall Penang

Queensbay Mall is probably the nearest mall to where we are located. Besides being the newest mall in Penang (since 1 December 2006), it is also the largest around.  Queensbay Mall also has a good array of tenants with Jusco being its anchor.

Other than the Golden Screen Cinemas and the Neway Karaoke Box, Queensbay Mall offers a fairly large skating rink (CYC Mega Fun World Roller Skate) and children soft play area (CYC Mega Kiddies World) in the South Zone on the third floor.

CYC Mega Kiddies World is pay per day. So parents can form a tag team to watch the kids and shop or play, lunch, and then play again! They have two rates for weekdays and weekends/public holidays. We will have to reconfirm the entry price but it is in the range of RM13-RM16. Children have to be accompanied by an adult. Socks are mandatory and some are available for purchase at about RM3 per pair. This does look like a good place to release your little Energizer Bunnies!

Just diagonally across from these is the trendy Queens Food Market (Center Zone) which houses a wide array of food stalls. From Thai to local delights. You are bound to find something that suits your taste there. The food court is clean, spacious and comfortable. The only vital thing lacking are high chairs for children! So be prepared to bring your own portable high chair or stroller, whichever suits you.

There are a handful of baby changing rooms available but not all are user friendly. We have been all over looking for one before only to find that the room only contains a cold slab of melamine with no taps or bins or straps! The cleanest and most equipped so far is the one found on the Lower Ground Central Zone. Having said so, it still lacks tissue holders and rolls. This baby changing room has a partitioned room suitable for breastfeeding. They usually have a baby changing room in the anchor tenant but we have not checked if there are any baby changing rooms at Jusco.

Looking for Dr Right

It was Baby Lee's jab time. So one of the tasks being new here in Penang is to do some homework as to where to bring Baby Lee for her immunisations as well as health concerns. We were recommended a paediatrician at Island Hospital but we would prefer a clinic-based paediatrician and one near our current location. I only managed to find ONE review online on a paediatrician located on Jalan Masjid Negeri. This is when I find the internet listings in the UK where we previously were really useful. One click and you can locate everything! Everything and everyone is listed, given ratings, with clear maps, etc. Back here, they don't even have a list of clinics in Penang!

Anyway, we thought we would check out this clinic on Jalan Masjid Negeri since it is not too far from us. We were headed there but didn't have the details of the clinic and Jalan Masjid Negeri is a long road so we detoured back to Klinik Aman instead......

Klinik Aman - A Qualitas Clinic
11 Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, 11700 Gelugor, Penang
Tel: 04-8281644
Fax: 04-2287540
A branch of the Qualitas clinics just a stone's throw from where we currently live. A glance on the clinic glass screen and it says immunisations offered. So we parked the car, unbuckled Baby Lee from her car seat and went in. Checked with the receptionist and he says that they don't stock the MMR vaccine and will have to order it in. We then asked if he could recommend us another clinic where he directed us to a Klinik Bersalin (maternity clinic) a few hundred metres down the road. Off we go...

Klinik Kesihatan Ibu dan Kanak-kanak Taman Tun Sardon
Gelugor, 11700 Penang
Tel: 04-6571592

As we turned out, we saw a sign pointing to a Klinik Kesihatan Ibu dan Kanak-kanak Taman Tun Sardon. We thought that since it was only a routine MMR vaccination, we didn't really mind getting it from a public health centre and then consult a paediatrician on all other matters later when we manage to source one. Well, the clinic is located on the ground floor of some flats. Hmm... And unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) it was closed on a Saturday. Back to the Klinik Bersalin.

This clinic and maternity ward is located in a 3 or 4 storey building. You have to take a lift to the first floor where the clinic is. The whole set up is really old and it feels a little dodgy upon entering the lift and then the clinic. We asked if they offered the MMR vaccination - yes, priced at RM120. Is the doctor a paediatrician as I have some questions to ask? Nurse confidently replied that although the doctor is not a paediatrician, she will know the answers as she does all immunisations for babies delivered there as a follow-up service. She also attends courses etc. bla bla bla... Ok, we... will.. hmm.. give her a try since it is only a jab. The doctor was pleasant but after going through some of my questions, she blatantly said that she is not a paediatrician and doesn't know the answer to some of my questions. She is also not too familiar with the immunisation schedule since Baby Lee received half of her vaccinations in the UK. She suggested that we try the Hope Clinic instead to consult a paediatrician. Ok, thanks Miss Nurse. As we were waiting for the lift, the nurse had the cheek to run after us to ask for RM10 consultation fee! What?!?

Tropicana Fertility, Women and Children's Medical Centre (formerly known as Srigim Women's Children's Hospital)
12-A, Jalan Masjid Negeri, 11600 Penang
Tel: 04-8299188
Fax: 04-8286118
Back into the car. Might as well try to locate this clinic on Jalan Masjid Negeri. At the brink of calling it quits, we spotted the Tropicana Fertility, Women and CHILDREN's Medical Centre. The word 'children' prompted us to think that this is a sure winner. Parked the car again, unbuckled Baby Lee for the umpteenth time and said hello to the receptionist. We were quickly let down when the receptionist told us that there are no paediatricians stationed there at the moment although the house doctor is able to administer vaccinations. Speechless. Then, some well dressed probably PR guy handed us the mobile number of a children's clinic supposedly located back up the road and very kindly gave us clear directions. Baby Lee is by now no doubt bored of the going in and out of car/ clinic game that her parents are playing.

Last call. If we can't get this one right, we're going home. Or for a plate of char kway teow.

As we arrived, the converted bungalow unit looks more than decent from the outside with bright glass screen decorations. A 'tagline' projects prominently on the first floor - WE TREAT YOUR CHILD LIKE OURS.

Inside, bright colours are everywhere! A funky aquarium divides the reception and the waiting area. This is where Baby Lee signed 'fish' on her own for the first time without being prompted! Just when I was doubting the effectiveness of baby signing... ;-) Well, done girl!

While waiting, Baby Lee was having fun with the toy cars downstairs and admiring the little smiley faces on the wall.

 And there is more upstairs!
The children and parent's activity area has tonnes of toys including a swing and slide! Maybe they should call this Sim Children Wonderland! There is also a breastfeeding room indicating that this is a breastfeeding friendly clinic.

Dr Sim was friendly and comes across as someone who knows his stuff as he was able to reassure us on the immunisation schedule and answer my questions with sound advice. He is not someone who will prescribe medications unnecessarily. The team of staffs are friendly too.

The bill came up to a reasonable RM88.50 -> RM35.00 consultation fee and RM53.50 for the MMR vaccination as well as paracetamol syrup in case Baby Lee develops a fever. The meds came in a free eco-friendly reusable medicine bag! Great, a green doc!

However, as with all popular clinics, be prepared to wait if you don't have a prior appointment. We found out later that even with an appointment, you will probably still have to wait. We were there for a total of about 2 hours on our first trip before leaving the clinic! Well, maybe you can bring your own tea and sit in the garden while waiting for your turn!

Can't believe we had to go to five different locations before we could get Baby Lee her jab. After over three hours, some kilometres and a cry later, we thank God that we ended up somewhere where we felt safe, clean and comfortable with a doc and his staffs who care for their little patients.
